SCHOOLS & EDUCATION COURSES
SCHOOLS AND EDUCATION
On the 3rd January 2019 Damian Hinds, Education Secretary, confirmed the go ahead for plans to add Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to the national school curriculum in England. Proposals see the inclusion of first aid and CPR on the curriculum as part of wider Health Education classes in England from 2020.
All children in state funded schools will be taught how to administer CPR, the purposes of a defibrillator and basic first aid treatments for common injuries by the time they leave secondary school. Learning these skills will give young people the skills and confidence to help others in need if ever required. By providing young people the opportunity to develop these lifesaving skills it helps them feel empowered and self assured that they do have the ability to potentially save a life.
The Resuscitation Council (UK) have highlighted that in the UK, currently less than 10% of people who suffer an out of hospital cardiac arrest actually survive, and around 270 children die every year of sudden cardiac arrest at school. However, often nobody starts CPR because they don’t know what to do. Valuable time and in many cases, the chances of surviving, has been lost by the time the emergency services arrive, if no bystander CPR has been performed.
In countries such as Norway where CPR has been taught in schools for many years, the survival rates are as high as 25% for out of hospital cardiac arrests, compared to UKs 10%, with the main reason being the increase in bystander CPR.
It has been demonstrated that children as young as reception year can learn important first aid & life saving techniques which become life long skills.
Saving More Lives by empowering people of all ages and helping to develop their life saving skills is our driving reason for becoming a training provider of first aid & life support. The more people that have these life saving skills & knowledge, the higher the chance of survival sufferers of cardiac arrests have, and these skills can not only be learnt, but used from an early age.
